WHY?
Practice with word meaning and other skills are always useful. Incorporating releveant materials and other lessons into a lesson is the best materials for students. The quality of the academic and standard is not compromised. However, the relevance provides authentic lessons and discussion within. Some of the ways this done by:
The relevance of the person or learning about an actual person can spark interest and curiousity into the child. It provides a sense of familiarity. When students feel familiar they are able to make connections to the academic content being taught and how they actually apply these skils without realizing. For instance, when students are reading academically and are not familiar with a word…they feel they are not familiar with the word. However, when students are reading things in a nonacademic setting for their purpose, they actually automatically use cluses to try to figure out what the person said. Many times children do this automatically, not realizing this is something they do. Providing these authentic Social Media posts removes some intimidation with students trying to figure out word meanings. They realize that it is not something unknown, but something they do often.
The time is always right to help children develop character traits and realize the importance of their words and actions. This activity focuses on words people say. More importantly, it focuses on actions of people who are no longer here. This activity is.a reinforcement to “Do Good. Be Good.” It serves as motivation for students to see the value of what they do.
